Shanghai American School—Moving from PC to Apple

As one of the biggest international schools in the world, Shanghai American School (SAS) has a reputation for excellence and is committed to ensuring that the experiences of its students further that reputation.

This commitment was reflected in the school’s desire to upgrade its one-to-one laptop environment, switching away from a PC-based program to an Apple educational laptop initiative. SAS also wanted to improve its networking to ensure adequate resources were in place for the new laptop program.

Solution
With a reputation for successful delivery of large-scale IT projects in the Shanghai region, SolutionKeys were selected to provide a total solution covering the purchase, configuration and delivery of 1800 MacBook laptops, installation of additional network resources utilizing Apple Server technology and an on-site technical support solution. This total solution allowed SAS to offer its students and teachers all the benefits of state-of-the-art mobile learning tools to use in its high-class learning facilities and ensure access to same day, face-to-face technical support.

Deployment
Logistically the project involved complex communication and planning to ensure the correct configuration and delivery of all 1800 laptops to teachers and students across the school’s two campuses, situated in different areas of Shanghai, 65km apart. Our careful project management saw the one-to-one laptop program delivered to staff and students in two stages:

1. Faculty: Equipped three months before the beginning of the new school year, allowing time to become familiar with the new learning tools.

2. Students: Received MacBooks during an intense six-week period of delivery at the start of the school term.

A project of this size had never been previously attempted in this sector, nevertheless SolutionKeys’ high standards of quality control ensured that all 1800 laptops were setup, configured accurately and delivered by our Apple authorized technicians, on schedule and at the rate of 300 per week.

In order to ensure that the school’s one-to-one initiative is successful into the future all SAS computers were delivered with a 3 year warranty and SolutionKeys established an Apple Authorized Service Center within the school campus, giving the school three years of hassle-free computing.
